Electronic Gift Card

The electronic gift card today is one of the easiest ways to give a gift to almost anyone in your life. It does not matter how personal or impersonal the gift needs to be. It does not matter if the recipient is an adult or a minor, a woman or a man.  The gift card could be for a mother or a father, a husband or a wife because there really is a selection that has the ability to satisfy them all.  What most people do not realize is that we have become a cashless society and 90 plus percent of all the money in circulation has never even been printed.  Millions of Americans and Europeans use electronic

debit cards as a matter of fact and rarely give it a second thought.  What most people do not realize is that an electronic gift card really has little difference than that of a debit card, or the credit card that you store in your wallet or purse.  There are a few subtle, understandable and important issues that we just hope to highlight for you to think about for a moment.

What is an Electronic gift card
An electronic gift card is nothing more than a card that has had a specific amount of money applied to the account that corresponds to the card.  There is no way the user can overspend because the sales for that card will not be approved if all of the money has been exhausted.  Briefly stated, it just means that if an account for an electronic gift card is opened and $100.00 is applied to the account, the purchasing power of that specific card is $100.00.  There is zero chance of spending over a set budget and there will never be an over draft fee or charge because the amount spent will never exceed the value of the card itself.

Types of Electronic gift cards
There really is no different “type” of electronic gift cards available on the market today.  They all are based on the same principle that was stated above.  You only can spend what has been deposited into the account for that specific card.  What many confuse about the cards is the fact that there are always very different and precise rules as to where the card can and cannot be used.  Since all Electronic gift cards (EGC) are the same, what really makes the gift personal is where the card can be used.  This is what makes the gift card so personal or meaningful to the recipient.

When deciding on what type of card to get someone you really need to think of three things:

• How much to be spent?
• Where can they use the card?
• How personal does the gift need to be?

How much to be spent?
This is very simple and straight forward and needs no explanation.  You will deposit into the account of the card the amount of money you want the recipient to be able to have as the gift.

Where can they use the card?
This is where many people make an error in judgement because they provide the gift of an electronic gift card and the card provided limits the place that it can be used.An example would be to a store or a restaurant that the recipient does not frequest.  I know in my family there is a Grandmother with the best of intentions that sent a gift card for a retail store that my teenagers really do not like the clothing selection.  The end result was a gift card that was limited to one store and although the intention was there, the full effect of the gift sort of fizzled.  Grandma did not know this because the kids did not want to hurt her feelings, but the end result was an electronic gift card that was not able to deliver the thrill that was hoped for by the purchaser.

This type of card is refered to as a store specific debit card, or in this case, a store specific electronic gift card.  Examples of this are found in all retail stores and restaurants that dot the land.  Examples of this are Target retail store gift cards or restaurant gift cards.  If you opt for a store specific card you just need to make sure that is where they will want to spend the money you deposited on the card.  This is not a bad idea if you have a certain memory or a favorite place that you just know they enjoy or will love to purchase.  The important thing to know is that at the end of the day a store specific card will only be able to be spent at the store the card was purchased, so be positive about the likes or dislikes of the person receiving the gift.

The next type of electronic gift card will be the Visa or the MasterCard gift cards.  The advantage to these cards is sort of a double edged sword.  With the use of one of these cards, the gift recipient will be able to use them anywhere in the world the Visa or MasterCard cards are accepted.  With the possibilities of use being limitless you will have no idea as to what gift selection will be made.  It also runs the possibility that the card will not be used for the intended purpose.  If you send the card to your grown daughter or son, they may use the card to just pay a bill or other non present form of use.  By using a Visa or MasterCard gift card, the availability of places becomes boundless and your control over the gift is lost.

How personal does the gift need to be?
If you are looking to keep the gift impersonal because it is for a person at work, then by all means get them any type of electronic gift card, because the end result is just the fact that you wanted to get a gift.  If you are looking for a personal touch when giving an electronic gift card and want the best of all possibilities then it is recommended that you get a prepaid Visa or MasterCard gift card and have a photograph

of your choosing imprinted on the card.  By having a photograph added to the face of the gift card, the present has now become very personal.  This technology is not only available, it is very affordable.

If you opt to have a card created with a personal photograph on the card you can rest assured that when the card has a zero balance, it will not be thrown away.  If you send Mom a card for Mother’s Day with a photo of all the children smiling at the camera, that card will be treasured for many years to come.  It will not be thrown away when the balance hits zero, so the card in essence has become the gift that you had hoped it to be.
